LaCie Unveils Dual-Format DVD Drive

Storage peripheral maker LaCie Group has announced a new DVD+/-RW drive that is compatible with both Macs and PCs. The drives come in two configurations: one drive supports USB 2.0 and FireWire, while the other drive is equipped with only a FireWire interface.

"This is the risk-free DVD solution users have been waiting for," said Salem Tirane, LaCie product manager. "With a single drive, they have the most universal and versatile DVD drive ever."

LaCie has followed the "d2" design they adopted for many of its hard drives over the last year for this new device. The drive is encased in a metal alloy that dissipates heat to prolong drive performance.

Keeping Cool

To prevent further heat emission, LaCie developed the power supply for the d2 design with an external AC adapter to keep the drive cool without the need for a fan. It can also be placed stacked on the desktop or configured in a standard-19 inch rack with an optional rack-mounting kit.

The LaCie Dual DVD+/-RW Drive is available this month through authorized resellers, specialty stores, and mail order companies with prices beginning at $299. Drives ship with a USB 2.0 or FireWire cable, a power adapter, and DVD utilities CD-ROM.

It also comes with Sonic MyDVD Video Suite, Arcsoft Showbiz, Roxio EasyCDCreator, Intervideo WinDVD, Roxio Toast Lite, and LaCie's CaptyDVD. CaptyDVD is shipping with the FireWire only version of the Dual DVD+/-RW Drive.
