The proliferation of widescreen display technology on the PC, in my opinion, has taken far too long. The PC is evolving rapidly to be the center of home entertainment, whether it be through merging the PC and TV through media boxes, or simply having high performance optical readers in your PC for watching DVD's. The benefits of widescreen are quite obvious, as the widescreen format feels much more natural in appearance compared to standard 4:3 ratio monitors, and as many mass media applications such as DVD and HDTV have taken a liking to the widescreen format, the moveof widescreen on the PC front is simply a natural progression.
Thus, it's surprising to see so few display companies have tried to market widescreen PC display devices to home users. Only a handful of companies have mass-produced widescreen displays, and the ones who have are seen trying to sell them to workstation users. Unfortunately, due to the small amount of displays available to the end user with widescreen support, growth in this market seems to have somewhat stalled. Luckily, there are a few companies left who believe widescreen is the way to go.
