It's been a while since we've had an uproar over Facebook's handling of its users personal information, so we suppose the time is ripe.

So cue the online outrage: Facebook announced today in a letter to Congress that the social-media platform is moving forward with plans to give third parties access to user information, such as phone numbers and home addresses.

Pretty sure you can't delete an account -- every action on FB ever is recorded and can be pulled up at any time, unless this changed recently. You can deactivate an account, but that just stops new information from being gathered.

We should put Craig on the job of creating it. Seriously though, a FB alternative is going to be hard to find, not that it's too difficult to replicate the functionality, the costs of running an operation with so much data and traffic would bankrupt anyone without huge outside funding in an instant. Best thing for an ordinary guy is probably making a forum at ipbfree or something like that for a limited number of people.

I left my home address and phone number blank anyway. I'm keeping most of my profile public, so I don't put anything that's not for world and their dog to see and any of my friends who doesn't already know or has lost one of those can always send me a PM.

Actually you can via THIS link. The problem is that if you use anything, such as a site or service that is tied to your Facebook account, like you tied your EA ID to it, have a phone app that accesses it, or what not, that stops the deletion process. The trick is that once you start the deletion process be sure not to use the account AT ALL for 2 weeks. At that point it's toast.

I don't think a profile or info is Totally deleted... Just hidden out of public view...

I had the same thinking as you, but I couldn't resist opening a FB account for the odd competition I enter. I guess I'm ok though, my account has the absolute minimum of details in there, nothing of a sensitive nature to give away to 3rd parties.

A substantial amount of FB users would be clueless to the dangers of it........ And everybody has to list their email just to sign up so that means everybody's email is for sale.

Honestly, imo you have to assume when you sign up to any social networking site, or indeed any other online service, that any details you give them are going to be publicly available.

You could always setup a second email account if you're worried about your work/personal address getting into the wrong hands.

I appreciate that it is easier for my generation - we've been brought up in this environment. I also appreciate that Facebook are breaching the trust of many of their users if they do this.

All I'm saying is that I'm not going to stop using their site just because they've turned out to be just as untrustworthy as I expected them to be, and I'm thinking that the majority of Facebook users would agree with me there. If, however, you feel that their service is no longer something that you want to use, or that you want your father to use, then that's obviously your (/your father's) call.

EDIT: Kudos to your dad for being online at all. After posting this, I thought about my own 85 year old relatives... none would touch a coumpter with a bargepole.

It's the breaking of trust for a buck that is the problem here..... People were told in security agreements that certain things were safe....... "Oops, we decided to change the agreement .... To bad for you"

That's the big problem... if you read the entire agreement it will say somewhere in there that they can change it without notifying you about it and by agreeing to it at this time you will agree to anything they change it to in the future..

So the only way to avoid having to deal with any if it is to not deal with it at all.

I haven't logged in for 2 1/2 years... and still people request to become my friend.. I get email notifications about it now and then, I probably have like 100 people waiting for me to accept their requests.

hmm, my facebook is used solely to keep in touch with people I would normally not have contact with, especially since I am now in New Zealand.
Family in Holland, Switzerland, friend etc.

but then again, I have ALL my information set to friend only in the security tab.. But selling info.. I guess it's just 2nd nature for big companies nowadays. You have this heap of potential money just sitting there -> convert it to actual money, more profit, increase in the stocks, happy board of directors, everyone profits (in their minds)
