For Intel, providing a complete chipset solution for the Pentium 4 processor is as important as delivering the fastest processor for the desktop market. When Intel launched the Pentium 4 processor at 800MHz PSB, they have already made provision for an integrated graphics chipset that support all the latest technology like Hyper-Threading, 800MHz processor side bus, Communications Streaming Architecture (CSA) and dual-channel DDR400 memory.
The chipset we're talking about is the 82865G GMCH (Graphics Memory Controller Hub) which forms part of the Springdale family. The 865G is similar to the 865PE chipset in almost every way, except that it comes with Intel Extreme Graphics 2 - an integrated graphics core that delivers good 2D and basic 3D graphics at an affordable price. For now, the 865G has the best combination, in terms of graphics and feature set. Of course, ATI's recent introduction of the RADEON IGP 9100 might be 865G's biggest competitor but we shall see in due course if ATI's chipset solution could deliver the kind of performance that we've all seen, tried and experienced on Intel's latest range of Springdale chipsets.
