Germany Orders Websites to Remove Facebook 'Like' Buttons

The order came from the data protection commissioner of the state of Schleswig-Holstein, Thilo Weichert, who explained the following:

"Whoever visits Facebook.com or uses a plug-in must expect that he or she will be tracked by the company for two years. Facebook builds a broad individual and for members even a personalized profile."

Quite right. That Like-button logs you everywhere after you've signed in to Facebook. It's a behaviour that ought to be easily turned off, but it's not. Because it gets facebook power and attention.

Re: Germany Orders Websites to Remove Facebook 'Like' Buttons

It does say at one point that "Facebook builds a broad individual and for members even a personalized profile." That would imply that an individual profile, albeit a less personalized one, is being compiled even for non-members, so you don't even have to use it. Which means that you just visit a page that contains the "Like" button and you're booked, without any warning or choice in the matter (kind of like Google Analytics if I understand the matter correctly).
