MSI Unveils Self-Cleaning Graphics Card
Component company MSI has detailed its latest exclusive graphics card fan technology - it packs a number of new features, the most interesting of which is its dust removal technology.
On booting, the fan runs backwards for thirty seconds, sucking out any debris that may clog the heatsink. _____________ Source: TechRadar

Re: MSI Unveils Self-Cleaning Graphics Card
That's pretty much what I think about this.
First, I'm not sure how effective it is at sucking the dust out. From my experience, trying to suck dust out is not the most effective way of cleaning a heatsink. Then, there's the matter of where the dust will go. If it just falls down to the bottom of the case, that might not be so bad. But if there's any other card in the case, the dust is just going to get dumped on top of it, which will certainly be pretty humiliating for the bottom card, only to get gulped right back by the graphics card as soon as it starts sucking air, which is pretty gross.

Re: MSI Unveils Self-Cleaning Graphics Card
it still should "help" at least a little...
personally i'm not comprehending why they don't start using some of the fan technology that has been available for quite some years that are used in even agriculture (fan related).. the dustiest/debree business on the planet.

I agree. Sucking is not real effective without something like a brush to loosen the junk. Where as a blast of air forced sends the junk flying. The good news is I don't think this going to work. Bad news if it does it just going to send that bit of dust floating around into you case to be sucked up by another fan like your CPU cooler or PSU fan for example... unless your case has side fan and its an exhaust.

Re: MSI Unveils Self-Cleaning Graphics Card
^ My sentiments exactly.
So after having the PC on overnight for a gaming fest in a smoking environment, when the PC gets eventually shut down, left to fester then turned on again the fan spins for 30 seconds? My PC's in a rather clean environment but a fan moving the opposite direction? That's kind of like using spit to get graffiti off of a wall... unless they can prove otherwise.

Re: MSI Unveils Self-Cleaning Graphics Card
ok I just can't see why anyone would want this feature
why would you want your gfx card to dump all its crap inside your case ? ![]() I just don't get it I'm afraid |

Re: MSI Unveils Self-Cleaning Graphics Card
I like this design and hope other manufactures go with it; I'd rather not have to worry about cleaning my graphics card fans and concentrate on my case dust filters and cpu fans. The other day I went to check my dust filters and there was a huge layer of dust and cat hair blocking all 3 of my 181mm fans I couldn't believe how bad it was. My type of GPU cooler doesn't really collect dust but If I had a reference cooler it would have been a pain in the ass to clean that out on top of the rest of the case (which at least has filters everywhere).

Re: MSI Unveils Self-Cleaning Graphics Card
Trust me, even if that fan was running at max RPM for an hour it won't get rid of cat hairs

Re: MSI Unveils Self-Cleaning Graphics Card
I don't think 30 seconds of backwards operation is going to remove hours and hours of forward motion dust collection. It may slow the dust collection a bit, but it won't stop it.
It might actually cause premature fan failure. Calling it "self-cleaning" seems a bit of a stretch though. Heh, I guess you could say that fan sucks and blows.
