LCD prices rise on Centrino demand, poor yields

A MONTHLY report on the prices of liquid crystal diode (LCD) panels says there's evidence of price rises in several sectors, while supply is tight at the manufacturing plant.

iSuppli in its June LCD PriceTrak, said that yields on fifth generation fabs were lower than expected, there was shortage of some components such as glass, while other parts such as film and polarisers might also be in short supply.

Further, said the market tracking firm, panels for notebooks stayed very high in June, largely as a result of shipments of Intel Centrino notebooks, and as corporate and other large buyers started to buy.

Notebook panel prices rose in June.

Monitor sales also remained steady last month, but prices on 17-inch panels are stabilising, and some prices are even falling.

Optimistic forecasts of price cuts for notebook and monitor panels in the third quarter "will be much lower" said iSuppli, largely as a result of poor yields. Price cuts are likely to come in the fourth quarter, however.
