RUMOR: Porsche 911 To Have Tri-Turbo Setup
I remember when I first heard that Bugatti had utilized four turbos WAY back when in the EB110.Then it did it again in the Veyron. That concept blew my mind.
Bi-turbos, on the other hand, were considered pretty standard in high-performance vehicles but now it seems there has been another shift. With the introduction of BMW's high performance diesel products, it has brought forward a tri-turbo setup for these "M tuned" vehicles. ______________ Source : autospies

How did this guy get his job. The Veyron and EB110 don't use quad turbo in the sense that there are four turbos feeding all cylinder banks. They use two-turbos per cylinder bank, or, in the Veyron's case, per pair of banks. It's more like having two twin-turbo engines. And biturbo/triturbo doesn't mean two/three identical turbos. You get different turbos for different stages in the powerband (to avoid turbo lag).

Re: RUMOR: Porsche 911 To Have Tri-Turbo Setup
yeah i was about to say... wtf
various stage turboing or cylinder seperated turboing. I was thinking perhaps they were using a 6 cylinder diesel with one turbo for a 2 cylinders each.. For example.... for a V10 viper.... there is only 3 combination of turboing solutions short of going for the 4th which is just a little rediculious due to requiring way to much space... (to much heat to) that being 1 turbo for all 10 cylinders..... 2 for each bank (5 one side and 5 on the other) and the 3rd being pairs of 2 cylinders ...... I've seen a quad turbo system on a V8 with each turbo powering 2 cylinders ... V12's have had 1/2/4/6 turbo designs available. Smaller turbos powering individual cylinders vs 1 big one power several.... has it's advantages and disadvantages.

Re: RUMOR: Porsche 911 To Have Tri-Turbo Setup
Normally "twin turbo" refers to various stages, and I think that this is what Porsche are actually on about.

yeah your talking sequential turbos.... While porche does use sequential turbo system in the non-911's .... i was under the impression that they used parallel turbo's (as i was talking) in the 911's.. parallel is used in several others. some large semi trucks sport the sequential turbo so that you have high hp/torgue at just about any range of rpm without worry of lag/stall/lack of consistant air. even the high end pickup trucks have it apparently.. There are even sequential Parallel turbo systems, where say a v8 will have 2 turbos on each side, and each of those turbos has a smaller turbo attached to them to cover all the ranges... essentially calling it a quad turbo.. lots of different ideas... but just need to keep balance.. kinda sucks that most people will never learn/know the differences and expect the same results.
