FBI will shutdown the Internet on March 8

The Internet could go dark for millions of users as early as March 8 because of a virus that has corrupted computers in more than 100 countries. Last year, authorities in Estonia apprehended six men believed responsible for creating a malicious computer script called the DNSChanger Trojan. Once set loose on the Web, the worm corrupted computers in upwards of 100 countries, including an estimated 500,000 in America alone.

This happened back in November, and I'm just now hearing about this. Sounds to me like the FBI did a piss poor job of "getting the word out" to the general public... don't you think? They should have been on this AT LEAST 2 months ago. Not "Oh, your Internet will probably stop working in 2 1/2 weeks."

actually i would consider what the fbi did as being ilegal.. essentially wiretapping all the infected machines.. they are as guilty as the people they arrested.

What they should have done, was set the replacements to offer a "walled garden" directing all links to display repair instructions for returning to ISP provided DNS, or to opendns if no automaitic option is available.

This is a sensationalist headline. The FBI isn't taking down the Internet. Nor is it taking down legitimate DNS servers. It is merely taking down the compromised DNS servers which the original trojan changed infected computers to use. In other words, if your Internet does get cut off on March 8, it means that your computer was infected and behaving improperly. Really, that's your problem, not the FBI's.
