Well that all very nice and all. But if automatic updates troubles you, why not remove that puppy completely? To do this go to your C:\WINDOWS\inf folder and find a file called sysoc.inf When you find it open it and look for the phrase:

AutoUpdate=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,au.inf,hide,7

remove the hide from the end of this leaving the commas so that the phrase now looks like this:

AutoUpdate=ocgen.dll,OcEntry,au.inf,,7

then close the edited file and save the results.

Next navigate to 'add remove components' and select 'add remove windows components'. Now when the list loads you will see an option to add or remove the automatic updates service. Remove the tick (or check mark if your American) click ok and wait for the removal process to complete. Once done hey presto! That sucker is gone forever.

This will not affect your ability to update via the web. If you do this, make sure you back up your original sysoc.inf file. It is also possible to add options to remove components such as Windows Messenger and Media Player and several other components using this hack, but beware, always make a back up of your sysoc.inf file before making changes and always run with a change for a few days (particularly checking the functionality of add remove programs - since you might inadvertantly remove this feature to).

So there you go folks, the one thing Billy boy never wanted us to know we could do. Take control of YOUR OS and your lives and don't give in to this kind of corporate control. Privacy is a right, not a privelidge.

Ps

This gets rid of automatic updates completely, so Billy and crew can't secretly turn it on again when your not watching. Just be careful what updates you choose to download from Windows update in the future. Anything about Digital Rights Management, be very wary of. (Particularly concening media player). Edit: If you have problems, do a search and make sure you chage ALL the sysoc.inf files you find to read like this and also ensure that you ucheck the the automatic updates box is 'services' in MSconfig (which will in any case prevent it from loading on windows start up) otherwise Windows may simply restore it.
