Death of Windows 9X will push up PC sales
SALES OF PCs during the second half of this year are set to rise steeply, according to a research document from iSuppli.
The industry can only hope. Incorrigible optimists have already bought up stocks of vintage champagne, while the more risk cautious are making do with Spanish Cava. Died-in-the-wool pessimists are sticking to methylated spirits or boot polish. According to Joe D'Elia, director of market intelligence for the firm in Europe, PC sales will grow during the second half of the year, in line with industry optimism and the need for corporations to replace old models. The following table, courtesy of iSuppli, shows its projections for the year. ![]() D'Elia said large businesses have stretched their replacement plans for PCs to four or even five years, but while that might have been a good way to cut expenses, there's good reasons why it makes economic sense for them to start replacing machines now. IT support costs will soar if PCs are not replaced soon as the electro-mechanical components – hard disks and the like - start to wear out. But Microsoft wil stop supporting Windows 9X operating systems, said D'Elia, meaning that corporations will be forced to upgrade to Windows XP or to Windows 2000. And when that happens, the hardware will need to be upgraded because old tired out PCs can't really run Windows 2000 and Windows XP that well. _______________________ Source: TheInquirer |
