British Gas buys 850 Centrino notebooks

PANASONIC HAS NABBED a deal in which it will flog 850 ruggedised British Gas engineers 850 ruggedised Panasonic Centrino notebooks. A rugged engineer with a rugged tablet/notebook is pictured here.

The CF-18 notebook uses a 1.5GHz Pentium M but is a model which can swap between notebook and tablet form factors. It uses Microsoft Windows XP "tablet edition", and the machine also supports Bluetooth and GSM/GPRS.

The machines have been delivered to British Gas already but Intel claims that by the end of 2004 it will order another 8000 notebooks using Centrino technology to their employees.

By then, the Dothan 2GHz 2MB cache Pentium Ms should be available, which will also support 802.11g.

While the British Gas notebooks have wi-fi technology built in, they will use GSM/GPRS for those blank spaces where you can't get a connection. Currently there's a fair few of those.

The Panasonic CF18 weighs two kilos, the firm said.
