PC recovery slow to come, PDAs disappoint

A COMPREHENSIVE report on PCs and other computing platforms warns that while there are signs of recovery, there's no miracle ahead.

Isuppli's survey of computing platforms said that unit shipments of PCs for Q1 of 2003 was 34.5 million, a 4.9% increase over the same quarter last year.

And while companies are buying desktop machines, the average selling prices are low, with firms taking advantage of the high performance to buy machines lower down the range. That signifies a significant drop in desktop revenues.

But, as we're reported separately, server sales are buoyant, with unit growth estimated at 13.1% this year, and revenues up by 5.6%.

PDAs are a black spot. Isuppli said that they show disappointing results this year and it forecasts a negative growth figure of minus five per cent. They're "discretionary spending" and largely bought by individuals with budgets to spend.

While the server market is showing good growth, iSuppli reckons that entry level servers accounts for 83.7% of shipments in 2002, enterprise servers 15.9%, and mainframes 0.4%.
