GeForce FX 5900 Named Official GPU of QuakeCon 2003

DALLAS, Aug 7, 2003 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- NVIDIA Corporation (Nasdaq: NVDA), the worldwide leader in visual processing solutions, today announced that it is the title sponsor for QuakeCon 2003, the world's definitive multiplayer tournament and PC gaming event. In addition to being the title sponsor, the Company also announced that the NVIDIA GeForce(TM) FX 5900 Ultra graphics processing unit (GPU) has been named "official GPU of QuakeCon 2003" and will be used to showcase the highly-anticipated PC game, Doom 3(TM).

"Every year QuakeCon delivers the hottest games running on the latest hardware, and this year is no different," said Todd Hollenshead, CEO, id Software. "QuakeCon attendees will be the first gamers in the world to experience the intensity of DOOM 3 multiplayer on NVIDIA's unbelievably-fast GeForce FX 5900 Ultra. We expect they will be blown away."

In addition to providing the purse for the championship gaming tournaments, the Company will also be hosting a series of activities, including:
  • The NVIDIA "Build a PC" Challenge: What can you do you with a box of computer parts in two hours? NVIDIA is challenging gamers to strut their stuff in the ultimate "do-it-yourself" PC competition. Contestants will be supplied with a box of parts and some tools; the rest is up to them. Competitions will be held on Thursday, August 14 from 2-4 p.m. CST and Friday, August 15 from 5-7 p.m. CST.
  • The NVIDIA Speedn Overclocking/Mod Contest: Feel the need for speed? This showcase of technical skill pits 100 of the best PC "tweakers" against each other for bragging rights and prizes. Held on Saturday, August 16 beginning at 11 a.m. CST, the categories of competition include: Best Overall Performance, Most Overclocked System, Best Case Mod, Performance, and Best Case Mod - Aesthetics. For more information about NVIDIA at QuakeCon, or to sign-up for this contest, log onto www.nvidia.com/nzone
  • id Software Challenge: The ultimate multiplayer gaming face off lets gamers take their shot at developers from id Software in Return to Castle Wolfenstein. This one-time-only competition will be held on Saturday, August 16 from 1-4 p.m. CST.
  • "The Way It's Meant to Be Played" Game Zone: Play some of the hottest PC games, such as Call of Duty, Quake 3 Arena, Return to Castle Wolfenstein and more on the newest Alienware PCs powered by GeForce FX 5900 Ultra GPUs and AMD Athlon XP processors.
  • Free Grub: Gaming is hard work. NVIDIA is supplying the sustenance to keep QuakeCon gamers going with free pizza and soda on Thursday, August 13 at noon CST.
"QuakeCon is a showcase of the newest technologies as much as it's a gaming tournament," said Dan Vivoli, executive vice president of marketing at NVIDIA. "This year's event is one of the most exciting in QuakeCon history. With Doom 3 on the way and $125,000 up for grabs in the NVIDIA Championships at QuakeCon, NVIDIA couldn't be more excited to be a part of the action."
QuakeCon will be held at the Adam's Mark Hotel in Dallas, Texas from August 14-17, 2003. For more information about NVIDIA at QuakeCon, or to sign-up for the NVIDIA Overclocking/Mod contest, log onto www.nvidia.com/nzone.

nVidia docent have the best card right now
There so close its to hard to call a winner! And this comes from a FX 5900 Ultra review in Computer Gaming World.

The articles head line reads "Nvidia Scores a Draw With Its 256MB GeForce FX Ultra"

I'm not going to reprint the whole thing (don't want to type that much )

But the final Verdict says...

They gave it 4 out of 5 stars
"Fast, as in very fast, and
thankfully, the noisy fan is a
thing of the past. That said, this
baby's expensive, and it's not
the clear-cut performance
leader. We also found the
1600x1200 tests disappointing.

In most of the tests that they ran the Radeon 9800 Pro 256MB was on top.
The FX 5900 Ultra did edge out the 9800 Pro in a few tests.

Wonder how much scratch did nvidia pay to "id"

Not that I believe everything I read in PC game mags! But it does go against what some of these other enthusiast sites have to say on the 9800/5900 thing

Mmmm [H] =

I don't think it has to do with who is best

I think it's just Nvidia's turn. I inquired the forums about why NVidia is this year's QuakeCon's choice of video card, but I got no real answer. Last year ATI was @ QuakeCon and this year it is NVidia. Maybe next year will be ATI again?
