VIA to merge VPSD and CPU divisions

VIA Technologies has decided to combine its VIA Platform Support Division (VPSD) and CPU division to better utilize internal resources, according to sources. When the restructuring will be completed is not known, sources added.

VIA set up the VPSD division in 2001 to sell own-brand motherboards to promote its Pentium 4-supporting chipsets while a legal dispute between the company and Intel was taking place. However, after the resolution between the two companies in April of this year, industry observers believed VIA’s VPSD division would become increasing less important as a focus for the company.

However, as VIA moves away from producing Socket 370-based CPUs and towards embedded CPU designs, cooperation between the two divisions has grown significantly, and full integration is now needed, according to company sources.

VIA sold two million processors in 2002, and estimates it will sell six million in 2003.
