IDF Fall 2003: What to Expect?

Intel Developer Forum 2003 is approaching and will kick off next Tuesday in San Jose McEnery Convention Center, San Jose, California. Highlights of the US IDF Fall 2003 in September will include nearly 200 hours of lectures, sessions and labs; keynote speeches providing vision and technology direction from top Intel executives; an industry CTO panel; and a technology showcase participated by more than 110 companies. Participants will also learn about developments and initiatives from leading companies and industry groups covering such topical areas as Wi-Fi and other wireless innovations, Hyper-Threading, PCI Express, InfiniBand, Gigabit Ethernet, Digital Home, security advances and mobile and modular platforms.

The most exciting parts of every IDF are new product announcements and discussions. At this point we are sure that the following products and technologies will be covered in-depth during IDF Fall 2003:
  • Intel’s Pentium 4 “Northwood” successor code-named Prescott. Be sure that the largest CPU maker will tell you nearly everything about its new chip since in a week from IDF the arch-rival AMD finally launches its highly-anticipated AMD Athlon 64 processor for desktop computers, hence, Intel will make everything in order to attract attention to its new desktop microprocessor.
  • Intel’s Pentium M “Banias” follower currently known as Dothan. The company already has samples of its new chip with 1.80 – 2.0GHz core-clock speed and 2MB of L2 cache for mobile computers; the firm will almost certainly make a number of statements in regards its performance and ramp through different market segments.
  • Also expect Intel to discuss its new Xscale processor currently known as Bulverde and designed for high-performance feature-rich handhelds. I believe, the company will also shed some light on its future WLAN/Bluetooth as well as platform solutions for mobile devices.
  • Intel Corporation will also unveil details of the server and desktop chipsets supporting DDR-II SDRAM and PCI Express technologies. The list includes Grantsdale core-logic sets for desktops, Lindenhurst chipset for 2P Xeon servers in addition to Twin Castle for Xeon MP platforms.
  • More details about a new form-factor for desktop computers, as well as new Extensible Firmware Interface for processors, called Tiano, will be also released during Intel Developer Forum Fall 2003.
Be sure to check X-bit labs news-wire for more information next week.
