Half-Life 2 Pay to Play

Just spotted this bit of news at Planet Halflife.

A fan by the name of Kamakiri mailed Valve's Gabe Newell about those "pay to play" rumors, and received the following response (which has been confirmed as being legit):

As I'm sure you are aware the HL2 community is going crazy with the rumour that HL2 is going to be like a MMORPG and you will have to pay a fee each month via Steam to play HL2 multiplayer. I don't believe this to be true but can you please put it to rest once and for all. PLEEEEEEASE.

Pay more for multiplayer? That's not good. Why don't they just sell the game and include multiplayer with all the SKU's?

well, it might be cool, I dont get their subscription though?! So you only pay subscription not game fee if you want? SWG and other MMORPG should take a page from HL2 book.

I think its dumb. I mean. They do realize that a 3 box system is going to be a nightmare. Right? I'd understand a collectors edition but a single player edition? WTF? It better sell for 20 bucks or some kids that accidentally buy it are going to feel really ripped off. Value keeps getting less and less in the games world... I'm kinda hoping HL2 SP game will suck and nobody buys it to discourage this kind of behavior in the future.

Also I should mention the little snippit about TF2 not being a mod. It uses the same engine and works on the engine if you have HL2 installed. I really hope they decide not to do that with CS...
