CRT monitors are dead, monitor firm says

A MANUFACTURER of monitors has predicted that by the end of next year, cathode ray tube (CRT) monitors will be obsolete in 2004.

They've had a good run. The name "cathode ray" comes from a time 100 years ago when no one really understood the phenomenon.

According to CTX, LCD monitors only accounted for six per cent of total sales in 2001, compared to 94% of CRT sales. Last year, LCD monitors accounted for 42% of revenues and in this year, according to Peter Hollman, president of CTX Europe, these type of screens will amount to 54% of revenues. In Western Europe.

So what about the 46% of CRT sales? Hollmann claims these will mostly be sold into Eastern and Central Europe, where, he claims, price is "still the main driver".

He claims that LCD monitors will drive the CRT monitors out of the market. He says that's an irreversible process.

So, while you can, buy the biggest CRT screen you can for the cheapest price. But that's what we're saying, not him. We really quite like our iiyama CRT.

Yeah, revenues... how many *units* were/will be sold? The typical CRT is less expensive than the equivalent LCD.

I was thinking the exact same thing. Besides I don't believe this article. Maybe some of the big companies will pullout of the CRT market but some of the little guys will continue for a few more years.

CRT's are still far superior to LCD's in terms of image quality and sharpness. LCD's still have a long way to go until they can achieve the quality and price of a CRT monitor.

Thats very true but you have to take many other things into consideration too, like portability (LAN parties!!), power consumption, space saving etc. I used to have a good quality 21" CRT now I use a 17" LCD and to be honest I wouldn't go back to CRT now

LCD's suck for games- Flat CRT's are the best for games, and look better than LCD's by far- It will be 2 more generations of poor picture quality and high latency LCD's before I will buy one.

the day they make lcd's 0.24 dot pitch like my 17" CTX PR705F crt ... then i might buy one as no other moniter comes near to its picture sharpness ... probably the best £250 i've spent on my pc

0.20 dot pitch... 19" equivlent.... res of 1920x1440 or better.... and refresh rate to match..... i read through... that LCDs run around the 50-100ms delay.. (might be off as i haven't seen the article for quite some time)..... now add that ontop of 50-100ms delay in online play or some super intense games....

CRTs are still solid and fast...

I am of the opinion that LCD's are still in the 'tooling up' phase. Until they get the refresh rates up and bring the price out of the stratosphere on them, I'll stick with CRT's, thank you.

And for goodness sakes, I wish they'd put a piece of glass or something over the screen. It bugs the heck out of me when you touch the screen and the colors go all fruity. Not to mention viewing angle problems. It would be nice to have the extra space on my desktop to pile stuff up on, but they are still WAY too expensive and problematic at this point to consider, IMO.

About the only positive thing I can say about them, besides the space savings, is that at least when they say they are a 19" monitor, you actually have 19 inches of viewable area, unlike my 19" CRT which only REALLY has 18" of viewable area. I always hated that little lie.

Yeah, that sux, but it isn't near as bad as the lie (or lack of info) LCD monitor companies seem to keep telling about response time. When they list it (if they list it), it is always hidden on some website or it is completely false- there is no set standard for the way they rate it, sometimes it's just for the black or white, when the color response time is much higher or what they say is completely wrong.. They want to make it sound better than it is, but when you actually see the momitor in action, all you see is blurry tracers.. Yuck- No thanks.

After getting my SONY 19 INCH LCD, every time I look at a CRT monitor my head starts hurting and I get dizzy..

so yes, LCD owns you, fck that ghosting s**t, you get used to it after like a month, and I get more frags now than I ever did with a CRT monitor, and a LCD monitor has no gamma ray crap, its just a liquid crystal display, ahhh just listen to the name, so soothing, I can stare at this thing for days and I wouldn't get a headache, with a CRT monitor I couldnt look at it for 5 hrs without getting a horrible headache.

LCD FOREVER. and this mother***** is tiny, you can put it anywhere

I wont buy a LCD till they solve the "res resizing" problems... On laptops it just makes it look ugly and their current solution of cutting up the screen is just stupid. I probably wont end up buying a new monitor till they find something "better" than LCD at this rate.

Res Resizing?

I'm running mine at 1280x1024 without any problems at ALL, I dunno what your talking about, and everything looks exactly the same as on a CRT monitor, only clearer and with better colors.

I would never get used to distortion. That's what is really- It isn't what the video card is trying to draw, it's extra stuff on the screen that's not supposed to be there. I guess it's personal preference, but it looks horrible to me. Have you ever had a flat screen CRT with a nice built in anti- glare screen? I'm telling you- no LCD could match how good it looks- and I do get headaches at 60hz- but at 85hz I can look at a CRT for days..

Now I dont know what distortion your talking about but if I can get used to it, anybody can... but I do have really good eyes, and young eyes too, but still.

Yeah I did have a anti-glare screen on my 19" CRT, until I made my dad break the CRT on purpose so we can get a LCD.

lol.

I'm talking about the actual ghosting, to me that is distortion, or kind of like an artifact (something that should not be there)- I guess it just bugs me more than most people.

I won't buy an LCD unless CRTs are more expensive, dimmer, and less contrasty. I might get one in 5-10 years
