Confusion reigns over AMD Duron

THE FINANCIAL Express, an Indian business publication, reports AMD India country manager Sanjeev Keskar as saying:

"Athlon 64 will be positioned as top-of-the-line premium processor by AMD in the desktop market. On the other hand, the existing Athlon XP series will be repositioned to be playing in the value segment as well. While higher speed Athlon XP will continue to cater the power user segment, lower speed XP processor will occupy the place of Duron, which should be out of the market by the end of this year."

In an eWeek piece about the resurrected Duron, AMD spokeswoman Duyen Truong is reported to have said that AMD will continue to sell both the older Durons as well as the new models as long as customers demand them.

Who is telling the real story?

I tend to believe the AMD spokeswoman. History has taught us that Duron is a very hard part to turn off. Demand for the new Duron shouldn't be any different, so I expect that part to last well beyond the end of the year.

Maybe someone at AMD can tell us what the real story is.
