Default Post Tired of viruses? Which program gives maximum protection?

Are you tired of getting viruses?, or is your current antivirus program just not delivering the goods? Cnet put the top programs to the test a few months ago.
Although its not a recent test, its interesting reading for those of you unsure about which program to spend your hard earned cash on.

They tested the following:

• Norton AntiVirus 2002_
• EZ Antivirus
• F-Secure Anti-Virus Personal Edition
• Kaspersky Anti-Virus Personal Pro 4.0
• NOD32
• Norman Virus Control 5.0
• Panda Antivirus Platinum 6.25
• PC-cillin 2002
• Vexira Antivirus Personal 2.0
• VirusScan 6.0

Default Post my choice is...

I've been using NAV for years now. Tried quite a few others, including PCcillin, McAfee, etc, and wind up coming back to NAV because it does what I want it to do, doesn't slow me down, and it kills bugs dead

And why bother buying liveupdate extensions - by the time your sub runs out, the next version is out.

I've been using Getright since it released. Works great, once you register you can remove all the adware crap. Even with my cable modem I still use it, as there are times it comes in handy, especially when you're trying to download something REALLY popular or from less reliable sites out there.

That's actually not true. The whole subscription thing is very misleading.. you can always download updated virus definitions without a subscription. To be honest, I'm not really sure what the subscription thing gives you other than maybe free upgrades in terms of software (not virus definitions).

Avast is now free for personal use, and has scored a recent VB100 success (AVG hasn't since some way back!)

http://www.avast.cz / http://www.alwil.com

If you want FREE, the only other game in town is the somewhat false-alarm prone ANTIVIR - http://www.free-av.com

Downloaders?
I wouldn't be without Metaproducts FREE Download Express - http://www.metaproducts.com
It's a downloader, but not a full download manager, but the important things - like resuming failed downloads, are all there. MASS DOWNLOADER is their "Pro" solution if you need scheduling, auto virus scanning etc.

The free one has 4 settings, configurable for throughput throttle and number of threads.
Drawbacks? tends to get thrown by some redirects, hold CTRL-SHIFT (one may be enough?) to prevent it activating!

Others:
Stardownloader, Freshdownload

I won't touch spyware infested junk like GoZilla and DAP - the free version of DAP IS Adware+Spyware, and any clear report by Ad-Aware does not make it different - the spyware is private, and embedded, and merely inactive in the pay version, but unremovable.

Weird,

I know it can too because I have done the same. Now I'm using EZ Antivirus, which will also manually scan archives.. No it may not scan emails; if an email/download has a virus I know right then when it's coming through. It has never failed me.

Hi,

I tried AVG and Kapersky (when it was free), but now I use Avast 32 which seems pretty good.

Follow this link: http://toronto.virusbtn.com/vb100/ar...sts.xml?200206

to see how it and others did...

For all you cheap bastards that want to completely scan your comp for viruses can try the online virus scanner at http://housecall.antivirus.com/ It seems to work pretty good. However I'm using NAV2002 and find that to run perfectly fine.

Default Post Still using Norton 2002 here....

I hate that it delays my startup process by almost 10 seconds, but Avast was telling me that the .exe files for Sum of All Fears and Ghost Recon were infected and no other virus scanner I tried detected it and they are the original files off the CD. I know they are not infected, but alas, Avast locks me out of them and it pissed me off so I trashed it and went back to Nortons. One feature of Nortons that I DO like is the fact that it scans my outgoing mail, very cool! No need in sending my friends the latest and greatest virus I just got by unzipping and running that *cough* "demo" version *cough* of that cool new game without scanning it first.
