nVENTIV Mach II: The Athlon 64 FX at 2.8 GHz
Ace's Hardware have gotten their hands on an Athlon64 FX clocked at 2.8Ghz! :o
- So there I was, quite impressed with the performance of the AMD Athlon 64 FX-51. Then I get a call from Denmark: "would you like to give a 2.8 GHz Athlon 64 FX a test run?"
Of course I would, this would mean we could test the Athlon 64 FX at 2.6 GHz and 2.8 GHz, and test the scalability of the Athlon 64's performance. AMD always bragged on how well the Athlon 64 core scales.
One day later an exhausted Danish engineer, Thorben, arrives at my place with a gigantic case. The nVENTIV Mach II consists of a 24 cm (9.45") high "compressor" box a tower case on top, the actual Athlon 64 computer.
Indeed the MACH II is essentially a computer with a small freezer beneath it. Just like your average freezer, a special liquid is evaporated (lowering the pressure quickly), the gas takes up heat and then condensates, and then the process starts all over again.
This is, of course, reminicent of Kryotech, the first company that really started to sell these types of systems. However, the nVENTIV cooling system is much more advanced, as you can upgrade your CPU even after the system has been assembled.
