It is required in my Networking Course. I don't usualy wear one when I'm working on my own personal machine. I guess it's cause, I haven't had a static failure yet.

I always touch something metal inside the case to ground myself. Although if you live in a moderate climate there is much less of a chance of a static discharge. IF I lived in a dry climate I would always where one. (if I had one- and I would if I lived in a dry climate)

Here is a few good trips to help prevent ESD damage.
1. Always hold a board by it's edges if possible. 2. Discharge yourself on a bare metal part of the chasis of your case w/ the AC cord still plugged up. Most people think it's okay to unplug then discharge, but where does that charge go? 3. Since most of you don't have any anti-static work mats a good idea is to use a static bag. However, just using a bag and not discharging yourself is a catch 22. The reason being is anti-static bags are meant to protect the enclosed item by letting the charge flow around it. Now if you have a board sitting on a bag, and you discharge to the bag...well you get the idea. 4. Paper is a NO - NO! Never sit anything PCB on a piece of paper since it builds up its own charge! 5. Work in a area that is flat, and is atleast at waist level if you can. If you have your rig sitting on the floor, and your scooting around that can always make you build up a charge. Also, carpeting of course is another factor in building up charges. You will laugh at this but think about it, never work on your PC with only socks at your feet either. 6. Keeping your PC free of dust (best you can) is another helpful act in preventing damage plus also helps prevent heat build up. 7. Wash your hands!! Yes, the secretions from your hands..oil etc... can be conductive plus leave a nice thin coating for dust to stick to. 8. Cloth anti-static straps are alright but for the best contact possible the flexible metal straps work the best. |

You can get them from CompUSA atleast the one near me And I know Fry's has them as well and there about $5 last time I looked but I picked up a few for $0.50 from a .com reseller, and I always try to remeber to attach a ground strap even though its all moist and all that, just good habit

I work on cell pone boards all day/night long@ work we must use the static straps... but in the PC shop or @ home nope....very rare
most pc techs never wear one... it's really not needed if you actually know what you doing.. there not all that effective and if your not touching all over the board like a mooron you'll be ok... handle by the edges and try not to tuch parts. Quote:

degradion... damaged but only slightly to an extent works / values permantly alterd/ life shortened/ can couse random issues that just pop up for time to time. (a real prick to pin down were it is too.....) catastrophic ... damageed not working.../exploded parts/ parts melted interally ................. for your info... the facts ................. It takes ... 2,000 volts to feel an esd dischage (the ones you just barely feel) 20,000+ volts if you can see the spark (the ones that hurt like hell) I takes less than 20V to destory an electronic componet in your pc!

Always! - or frequent contact with the metal case if none is available.
For "junk box cards", such as those from a bargain bin at a fair, I wrap in paper if the only alternative is a plastic bag or unprotected impact with other objects. Paper may not be good, but it doesn't create and hold a charge like plastic! |
