INTERVIEW: VisionTeks Michael Murphy @ Driverheaven
We have just posted our latest interview, this time we had the opportunity to speak to VisionTek's Technical Support Manager Michael Murphy.
"Veridian3: For our readers can you give us a little blurb on who Visiontek are and what your role and responsibilities are for them. Michael Murphy: VisionTek is a division of Hartford Computer Group, Inc., founded in 1978. The Visiontek and XTASY brands gained increasing popularity from the time of their launch in 2001. They were the top selling graphics product line in the U.S. retail market for most of 2001 and 2002. Hartford acquired the VisionTek and XTASY brands in December 2002 and is committed to bringing the most innovative and best performing products to PC enthusiasts. VisionTek is ATI's Premium Retail Partner for North America and will be among the first of ATI's add-in board partners to deliver the new products. The current Visiontek product offering includes 3D graphics accelerators, system memory, flash memory, and portable USB drives. I am the Technical Support Manager here and in addition to running our tech support team, I have been fortunate enough to become involved in new product evaluation and testing." You can find the whole article here. And comment here. |

Great interview! I figured I would add my two cents as a response though!
I have had problems with VisionTEK and their Nvidia card support. Lifetime warranty, great. Toll free tech support, great. Waiting 3 months for your card to come back, not good. Calling them only to be told they will give you a lower end model to replace your card, not good. Sitting on hold with their tech support for 2 hours waiting to find out what happened to your card, not good (I actually e-mailed them about this one but never got a response). I still don't have my card back from them yet. Their tech support wanted to upgrade me from an Nvidia GF ti4200 to an ati 9000 NP for $90. I don't think so! After I turned that down they wanted to give me a GF4 ti4200 SE which is a card w/out LCD display support! I bought the ti4200 w/ LCD support as I have an LCD screen, I passed on that one. Than of course I come to find out that they said my card was dead, and that they wanted to give me someone elses card that came in broken. They said they fixed it and would give me that card. Now I don't know about you guys, but when I RMA a product, and they tell me that it is broken. Why in gods name would you accept a refurbished card (THAT is NOT your own card!!!) in return? With refurbished products you have no idea what went wrong with them. My cooling solution on my card died and it screwed up the VPU, think I want someone elses card where they just replaced the heatsink and fan? I don't think so. I will never purchase a visionTEK card again, their "toll-free tech support" is not that good because you sit on hold forever and half the time they don't know what they are talking about. I will admit however that once you FINALLY get through to a knowledgeable representitive they help you quite quickly. Always ask to talk to the supervisor, and always write down the names of the reps you talk to. Edit: Something else to mention I read somewhere that they didn't make the change to ATI by choice. They went bankrupt and were purchased by another company who decided to honor the lifetime warranties of the Nvidia cards while they manufactured the ATI ones. Makes you wonder why they went bankrupt selling the Nvidia cards?

Hi everyone and thanks for your feedback! And thanks again to DH for the opportunity to do this interview.
Certainly, anyone who has had a problem with VisionTek support and/or our returns department is a concern to me. There isn't anything more important to me than making sure that we take care of each of our customers and I'm especially glad that this interview has given me the opportunity to hear about a customer who has had troubles. Our support department strives each day to satisfy everyone who calls. I am especially concerned with the claim of long hold times when contacting our support department. Our techs do, and should in my opinion, take great pride in their ability to answer the phone promptly. I couldn't hope to work with a better group of techs! Because of this, I would like to extend an open invitation to the members of DH to call our Tech Support department and let me know, via PM, if they have to hold for a period of time that they consider unreasonable. I am confident that we won't disappoint! Also, please feel free to PM me with any VisionTek issues that anyone may have been unable to resolve and I will make sure that any/all outstanding issues are promptly addressed. Thanks again! Mike Murphy VisionTek |

At 1:05 PM EST I called their 1-866-VTEK411 support line to check on the status of the RMA order that was shipped to their company on August 29, 2003.
After about 5 minutes of waiting on the phone (finally I got through! Just don't call around noon EST and you can get through) I spoke with Lewis whom was the first representative in the last 2 months to give me any answer as to what is going on with my card. Finally, a representative that does not give me the "We are out of stock of your card and they are on backorder. We can ship you a refurbished ti4200 SE or an ATI 9000 for an additional $90 as an upgrade option." Lewis finally gave me the answer I have been looking for for the last two months. "We will be shipping your card out within the next two weeks and you will be getting a card that is comprable to the card you RMAed or one of slightly better quality." While I was told when I called a week ago that it was shipping out in 10 days, I suppose this is better then never? Waiting over two months is still a heck of alot of time to wait for a card to get returned either way you look at it. Mike: If you must know I can provide my RMA number. I am surprised you are more concerned about the telephone support time than about the over two months of RMA turn around time...

Well I just got back from Fry's And I am the proud new owner of a VisionTek Xtasy 9800Pro
I really hope it's better than the FIC brand because it was $30.00 cheaper But I went with VisionTek Like I said I had a VisionTek GF3 Ti200 and it was a good card. And it's still in use today, I sold it to a buddy at work. I'll install my new card tonight after work.

Vengeance - I'm sure that you will be very happy with your new 9800 Pro!
Mazuko - Please understand that I am in a position to affect customer satisfaction regarding a person's experience with our support team and one of the largest factors is the amount of time spend waiting on hold. I don't think that there is any question that a long hold time negatively impacts a customer's experieince. This is not to say that I am not genuinely concerned with our RMA process. I agree that you have waited too long for your replacement video card and I will again extend to you my offer to help. It sounds like you got taken care of today-if you were describing a call that you made today but I would still like you to send me your name or RMA number through PM so I can make sure that your situation is taken care of. The best part about working in any technical support environment is the satisfaction of taking care of a customer who has a problem-regardless of the nature of the problem, technical or otherwise. I'm sure I will as well Mike
And I want you to know that this interview you did with DH is what made me go out and get a VisionTek. I could have just went to circuitcity which is real close to my house and got an ATI 9800 pro for $350.00. But I have always like the VisionTek brand. And it was only $379.00 And I got a cool plastic box to go with it. Hey I thought VisionTek put a copy of PowerDVD in?

Mike perfect question for you, I think your the guy to ask.
Can I add ram sinks to my new card or will it void my warranty?

Oh, no you're right - it does come on a separate disk. I was just surprised that you didn't have the disk. If you don't have it, let me know and I will make sure that you get it. I suppose that it could be missed being put in the box, I just haven't seen that happen before...

Updated system specs noted Vengeance...
Unfortunately, modding the board in any way (including adding ram sinks) will void the warranty. Not much that we can do about it either as returned cards go to a separate department for evaluation. |

Thanks Vengeance-glad to hear it. But really, it's my pleasure. Talking to our customers is what keeps me coming to work every day.
Don't tell anyone , but the one of the biggest reasons that I wanted to start the VisionTek support forum was so I could spend more time talking to the people that buy our products. This is something that I really enjoy doing!PM's waiting for both Vengeance and Mazuko. And, Zardon, really, it's my pleasure and thanks to DH for allowing me to use your forum to try to help some of our customers out. |

I just wanted to post a follow up here.
After purchasing a Geforce4 ti4200 made by VisionTEK the card was defective. Two months and 3 days later, the replaced my card with a VisionTEK Xtasy 9500 PRO. Thank's for replacing my card with a higher quality board despite the turn around time I am happy. Thank's again.
