Microsoft's plan to Google hard drives

Microsoft is conducting research that could help it in its quest to make search a greater part of its Windows operating system.

Microsoft is experimenting with different search technologies that will, among other tasks, conduct Google-like searches on an individual's hard drive or categorise query results in different ways intended to make the data easier to digest.

In many ways, the research seems geared toward finding a user interface for the storage and database functions in Longhorn, a major Windows update expected in 2006.

Implicit Query, an experimental application that was put together a few weeks ago, for example, retrieves links, music files, emails and other materials that relate to applications running in the foreground, according to the company.

There is no way I want the contents of my computer available for all through a search engine. I assume there will be an option to turn this off.

... no no.... instead of the search for files function... they'll build a search engine similare to that of google..... it won't be available for everyone......

I did. I also read this elswhere about 2 months ago. The site on which I read the same/similar report stated that ms' plan was to have all hdd linked together in the manner I was stating in my above post.

I can only go on what I read.

If longhorn is going to use a 'google' type engine for indexing files then fine, I don't mind, it can only be a good thing. I just don't want my data available to all - which is what I also mentioned previously.

and remember that this is microsoft - so naturally i am suspicious.

BTW, did u know that your custom user text (11011010101) translates to Ú . Just though you'd like to know.

I believe the idea is to use some of the same type of algorithms that Google uses on your local filesystem for your own personal use. Doesn't mean that the results of those algorithms are necessarily remotely accessible.

I totally agree.

The 11011010101 I got from converting 1749 in calc to binary. (1749 is my engineers tech code for work) I don't know a lot about binary so wasn't trying to get Ú. Ah well. Thanks for the heads up.

Actually, you're right Logla it does in Windows Calculator. Go to scientific view, Click the bin radio button, paste in the #, click the dec button and u get 1749. That's weird that the binary translator shows it different.

About MS there's no way they can go as far as showing your hard drive contents on the internet. If that happened they would lose all their business.

It's funny, if you look on the net you will see some decimal to base 2 converters that do give you the same response Logla had, however most showed what I got. weird.
