AOL offers PCs for $299

America Online is offering a PC, monitor and color printer for $299 to subscribers who sign up for its Internet service for one year, the latest effort by the Internet service provider to prop up its subscriber base.

AOL launched a Web site, 299pcdeal.com to promote the offer.

The "new AOL Optimized PC" is built by Systemax, a Port Washington, N.Y.-based PC maker. The PCs include a 1.7GHz Intel Celeron, 256MB of RAM and a 40GB hard drive. They come preloaded with Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition and Sun Microsystem's StarOffice software.

You're so right about security: AOL's sucks. Anyone can spam their computers or use their accounts for just about anything. It's just too easy. Even an average computer user can hack into an AOL computer with the use of a simple program. My advice is: if you have to use dial-up, get something that doesn't take over your computer like AOL does. Try MSN or Earthlink (never tried it but hear it's good) and as always never forget that firewall (configured properly - very important) and get all the updates via Windows Update and get an AV scanner.

Go to here to research. Get a small isp, they tend to be better than the giant corps IMO.
