Here is a pretty good buyers guide on building a good computer system for 800 dollars or less. This includes everything from the speakers to the mouse, keyboard and Operation system.

"Most of what we cover here at ExtremeTech lies on the bleeding edge of consumer technology. While that may make for interesting articles, we recognize it's not always practical. After all, not everyone has $900 to spend on a CPU or $500 for a new video card. It's tempting to toss items into an online shopping cart, fill out the credit card form, and get some shiny new toys to play with. Then your spouse sees the credit card bill and you're in the doghouse for a couple months.

Recognizing this, we endeavored to build the best PC we can for just $800. That's $800 for the whole shebang: keyboard, mouse, speakers, monitor -- the works. We put together an inexpensive PC that is fully capable and avoids all those little nagging complaints you often have when you get really price-conscious, like "But it's no good for games," or "You can't burn CDs with it."
