Kazaa Lite shut down

The Kazaa Lite K++ project has been shut down by Sharman Networks on grounds of copyright infringement.

The project, which had been set up to block spy and ad ware within the Kazaa Media Desktop Program has achieved notoriety within the P2P world through its simplistic approach and success in reverse engineering the Kazaa application.

However, the program infringed on the copyright of Sharman Networks, the company that now own and program the Kazaa Media Desktop application, after the purchase of the code and copyright in 2002. The FastTrack (Kazaa) network is financed through advertising systems, which Kazaa Lite K++ does not include, and so was seen as a threat by the owners.

Sharman have threatened legal action, and ordered that the offending content be removed from the official Kazaa Lite sites, including http://www.kazaalite.tk/ which now contains no reference to the existance of the application.

Well, the downloads off the websites are gone, but for those who already have it, it sure does still work!

I decided I'm gonna give shareaza a try also.

P.S. 1000th post - YAY!

I am sure if anyone here wants the latest versoin of Kazaa lite, all they would have to do is ask and someone would probably have it somewhere. The major issue with Kazaa, the orginal version is the amount of spyware in the program. This is fine with me though, Kazaa is now a dead p2p program. I imagine edonkey or another good one like it will take over. Maybe even winmx.

Even for those who already have K-Lite, it won't function for too much longer. (link). Not much of a loss though; plenty of other excellent and spyware free P2P's in existance - Shareaza, Piolet, eMule, Ares (Don't install navhelper with this one). There's no shortage.

AHAHAHA, go ahead. No need in using a P2P program that uses like 20-25% of the CPU cycles for crap. Kazaa, Kazaa Lite, Shareaza, eMule (eDonkey)....... All hash files which chews up massive CPU cycles. Waste of time.

Tried Shareaza, Piolet, eMule, Ares

Ares has my vote! Use this~! It's a great lil program. The ease of use rivals that of K++!

Most people that used Kazaa Lite are probably not willing to go back to a spyware laiden application... so for a piece of software like that relying on people with shares to keep it alive, and the number of KLite users that aren't coming back... they're probably losing a little more than they're gaining. :P

At any rate, it was inevitable. Lol

KLite just suffered the fate of all programs of its kind, a new one will merely take its place.

(In this case, there are tons of others. lol)

DC++. I can't think of anything else worth the time. I have never NOT found something I was looking for on there. And a large amount of the sweedish users have fast as hell connections which help for DL speeds of course.

Ya, DC++ is definitely great... Only thing I use at the moment.
A friend of mine introduced me to it maybe six-seven weeks ago... Love it.

File hashing is a necessary funtion of all modern P2P applications for a number of reasons. The primary use is unique file identification. Second is corruption recovery. Both Shareaza and Ares (and any recent Gnutella client) can use TigerTree hashing which allows corruption recovery for loss of less than 1MB/corrupt block, and eMule uses CMD4 hashing to get a loss of ~9MB/corrupt block. Piolet only uses SHA1 so the file can only be determined if it is corrupt or not as a whole (that is, it can't tell which part is corrupt).

Kazaa uses the crummiest hashing scheme in existance - it can't even uniquely identify a file because the whole file isn't even hashed. A hacked node could serve you entirely incorrect data in those large unhashed blocks and Kazaa would be none the wiser (while you get completely unusable files). For a little more info on why Kazaa's hashing sucks (link).

In any case, hashing is only performed once per file and after that your CPU is free. It's a completely painless operation and saves you from wasted time redownloading until a non-corrupt copy comes through. Even on my pitiful 400mhz CPU, file hashing doesn't take up that much power.

Then why does a computer that runs Kazaa burst to like 25% CPU usage every 5 seconds? I've seen it on numerous of my friends computers. I tell so many people why Kazaa blows.

Well, that's just Kazaa being the turd it is. It has nothing to do with hashing.

What options do they have enabled while its doing that?

What else are they using?

Are they doing a file search?

I use kazaa on my laptop and even when I put it down to level 3 performance (hidden option of the P4 mobiles, kicks it down to 500MHz and lets you have tons of battery life and actually the OS and all still works just fine) I can hash the kazaa files in a few seconds and no CPU time is eaten up after that. However, if I start searching for files the CPU time goes way way up.

Thats why I ask all of the questions. Now the one that uses up the most of my CPU time for hashing files is BitTorrent. It uses a better hashing method than most file sharing apps. However the price you pay for that is in CPU cycles until the files been hashed. After that its just fine

Like I said in another thread, I don't use P2P to get music, apps, games, etc. I only use it for "miscellaneous" files. But, nonetheless, I like shareaza because the new version is sorta an all-in-one. Here's a quote from their website: "Help us test the next major version of Shareaza, which supports G2, eDonkey2000, BitTorrent and legacy Gnutella!" I tried it and it's pretty fast at mass downloading "stuff". I would never trust a P2P program for any important stuff or any big files. No need for that as IRC is still the king as far as I'm concerned.

Is the current version 2.4.3 ? - if so, I just downloaded it (and NOT from some dirty backwater either!)

Dunno that I'd ever use it, but to anyone that says "you can't", I say "crap!"

Remember ForceASPI? the hacked install of Adaptec ASPI drivers?
They tried to stop it, but they were just pissing in the wind.
