Spam, spam and more spam

Most of you know today of the new laws in Europe to battle spam, for those of you who have no idea what im talking about The laws make it a criminal offence to send e-mails or text messages unless the recipient has agreed in advance to accept them.

Firms which continue to send junk mail face hefty fines and can even be sued by the recipients.

THE BBC has more information on this if you would like to read more.

Personally im certain this wont stop our inboxs in the UK being swamped with offers, bodily enlargements and offers of massive loans or free access to porn sites, because lets be honest alot of the spam mail comes from the USA or other countries outside europe. Im not attacking the USA, im merely stating due to its sheer size and internet capability these laws will be rendered almost useless.

Whats your views on this, is there any possible way to stop spam at the source? discuss in our forum.

I don't get hardly any spam on my main mail account but on yahoo it's insane-- it's usually from China or Europe somewhere. The spam laws just passed here are a freaking joke.

Nope i don't think there is a way to stop it with out all the countries making some kind of rule or law together. Which will never happin, as the US will not conform to others views or policies, we think were better than every body else. We got big problems coming to us, if we don't start using or Heads, or at least are Goverment dose. Just my two cents.

I myself am trying a new thing starting tonight. I have now enabled the proxy function in my firewall. So now my Web and e-mail all run through the proxy server/firewall. The cool part is, there is a very nice spam filter built into the e-mail proxy (even can filter out any file types like exe, zip, jpg, what ever you feel like filtering) so that along with Mailwasher I should be pretty good.

I just remembered my ISP has a spam buster that you can opt into- I've been using it and don't have a spam problem at all- but then again I'm very careful with that email address. If I got careless I'm sure spam would come.

what i do to avoid spam in my email is have 2 accounts.....
anything i sign up to (DH,Gamespot,Gamearena etc) i use my hotmail...thats the account that gets spammed...

but i have my account provided by my ISP totally 100% spam free as i only give it to family and close friends..
main thing is that hotmail isnt actually on my PC unless i down load the file....so no spam on my PC

im sure alot of you guys do this...but i thought id share

You can use your primary e-mail to sign up to DH with- you won't get spammed because of it, at least I haven't- Yeah, I do the same with my main e-mail account too- but I still sign up to websites (like here) and others with main email and never get spammed.

I like spam email... it's the only kind of email I ever get. It makes me feel like at least someone out there wants to talk to me. And hey, if they want to make my penis larger too, well then that's a friend to me ;p

I have serious doubts that passing laws will deter the spammers much at all. They'll always find some way to get around whatever laws are passed.

Like others, I use the freebie emails like Yahoo and rarely give out my main ISP email account. One of my Yahoo accounts still fills up well over 100 Bulk emails each day.

A spammer in Virginia was arrested yesterday, and was charged for sending spam email. He is the first person to be charged with the new state law, that could get him up to 20 years in prison. He was arrested on four counts of using fraudulent means to transmit spam, said Virginia Attorney General Jerry Kilgore.

The spammer was charged for violating limits on the number of messages a person can send and also for spoofing routing information, both of which are illegal under the Virginia law that carries penalties of 1-5 years in prison on each count. Roughly 50% of Internet traffic is being used to send Spam (Junk Email). New laws are being implemented in different states to stop spammers from sending unsolicited emails.

---Well I guess this is a start huh?
---Just wondering, how many people get arrested for spam over there in Europe?
