The Trouble With AVI Movies In Windows XP Editorial

Got this email just in from my good mate Adrian.

Adrian's Rojak Pot ( http://www.rojakpot.com ) just posted The Trouble With AVI Movies In Windows XP editorial.

"Whenever I click or open certain AVI movies in Windows XP, Windows Explorer would lock up and cause the entire system to come to a standstill. You also cannot edit or delete these AVI movies! Why? Why? Why???!

Because this is yet another Windows XP bug. Don't take it the wrong way. I love Windows XP. It's the most stable Windows OS ever. But this bug sure has bugged me (pun intended!) long enough! It's time to fix it once and for all !

Nice, I think this problem has gotten me before, but I thought it was some random problem with the file. I think I deleted a few files that I thought were messed up because of this too. Thanks for the heads up!

Probably the best known issue ever with WinXP, but it was fun to read a good rundown of it.

As usual a great article from adrian but for those too lazy to go over to the site.....

The Solution

For the record, I found the solution in the Tech Support Guy forums. Specifically, it was this page - Deleting a file (XP).

According to LwdSquashman, this problem can be easily solved by a little registry editing. Here is his solution :-

1. Open up regedit.exe.

2. Go to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\SystemFileAssociations\.avi\shel lex\PropertyHandler

3. Delete the "Default" value which should be "{87D62D94-71B3-4b9a-9489-5FE6850DC73E}"

That's it! It is so simple. I tried it out myself and it worked like a charm!

If you are facing this problem yourself, try this solution out!

I have one 800 mb avi movie in my HD and every time i try to delete it my system completly hangs and i have to reboot

It's like having a bomb buried in your garden, you know it's there and you can't do anything execept to mark the area with a red flag

Here's my solution: When you need to delete such hanged AVIs you must right-ckick on this file, then choose Properties and in the General tab just change extension from .avi to any another (even .aaa) a then you can delete this file

The issue doesn't get really nasty until one comes across a very large file with a damaged index.
