Spammers go to the Slammer
A spammer in Virginia was arrested yesterday, and was charged for sending spam email. He is the first person to be charged with the new state law, that could get him up to 20 years in prison. He was arrested on four counts of using fraudulent means to transmit spam, said Virginia Attorney General Jerry Kilgore.
The spammer was charged for violating limits on the number of messages a person can send and also for spoofing routing information, both of which are illegal under the Virginia law that carries penalties of 1-5 years in prison on each count. Roughly 50% of Internet traffic is being used to send Spam (Junk Email). New laws are being implemented in different states to stop spammers from sending unsolicited emails.
