G5 vs Opteron, Finally!!!

It's been months since the G5 and Opterons have been available for purchase. When the G5 systems were first released, many Mac bashers and AMD nuts discredited the G5's performance. They always ended their comments with 'Wait until its compared to an Opteron, then we'll talk.' Well, it's finally time to talk. Barefeats has posted an article comparing the two systems. The G5 line was compared to a Dual 2GHz Opteron and the results are impressive. In gaming, the Opteron system proved to be superior, which is partly due to the superior 9800XT over the base Radeon 9800. The G5 spanks the Opteron in many of the non-gaming tests, except for the Photoshop tests."

Interesting...wonder why the guy didn't slow down the XT to regular 98K speeds? The only big selling point is what software will run on the Opteron setup as opposed to the G5. If I had money to burn (which I don't) I would love to see a Pro Tools setup with one of these G5's!! Oh yeah so if those PowerPC processors are faster than Opterons that means their faster than Intel too.

.... those are pre built... they also say you cannot build a apple from scratch either (which is wrong)

Also... Mac OX X may not be 64 bit.... but it built specifically with a G5 in mind... and they bought it from apple.. apple would have done some fine tuning to the OS BEFORE installing it.. and selling..... To bad AMD doesn't have total control over Windows XP

I'm not sure if even linux would be better....

Mac G5's are more mature..... they muture alot quicker..... i'll give them that.... but they only do that because there isn't a variety... no conflicts......

I'd say it isn't a fair fight..... close...but it'll be awhile.....

Also.... it's not hard to believe that the Orginally built for MACS.... software.. does run better the when it's ported over to windows.... Not making full use of the Optimisation it could take ahold of.....

And it does bother be to see Photoshop take off.... as i understand it.... Adobe is pushing full ahead with the windows version... and possibly will be dropping mac support....

Actually it really isn't fair. Both systems do not have a graphic card of same model (in this case could give the edge back to the G5). Both operating systems are not build equaly therefore, Mac OS X has a great advantage here. Like someone pointed in the Slashdot comments, i would have really prefered to see the both systems running linux instead. Bryce test is a shame since it really doesn't push the system that much compared to it's much better and maturer brothers, Maya, 3D Studio Max or Softimage. The Photoshop test... no every test seems awfully badly detailed... no not detailed at all. The photoshop tests have no significance if you cannot interpret the results with the actual simulations then the data is useless.

To say that "the G5 spanks the Opteron in many of the non-gaming tests, except for the Photoshop tests" ... well... it's kinda false since the G5 really only did better since the margins where reality wise (you know... actual time) very small. To say that the G5 spanked the Opteron it would have to really show that it was extremely slower.

Anyway... my 2cents

Its interesting if you take it with a grain of salt, too much variables for a true analysis though, and here I thought adobe was more mac oriented, even they are seeing the light now
