this: D:\1078_xpsp1\update\update.exe /s:<C:\WINXP> that from the run box, so it's running the update.exe (you can extract the installer using WinRAR or like.) with the switch /s for slipstream mode. followed by the directory (copy of OS CD) to update. Then it should apply it to that directory for a slipstream installation. C |

ok here's my 2 cents on the issue...i got my legit copy of xp through work via my tech upgrade account...but even tho i didn't pay the $199 for the retail upgrade...i still don't like ms telling me i can only use their product on one pc at my house per cd purchased...so one pc is legit...one is corp...the way i see it is it'll be cracked and if it isn't i can go back to win2k on the other pc...you can debate price vs piracy all ya want...my basic question is"how much money does one man really need?"

which one man? Bill? or his employees spending hours of development time to bring people the software, no doubt Bill's making a tidy profit, but it isn't all profit and isn't all going to him, Microsoft lead the way in terms of software and in order to take control of the wor... i mean keep on the edge of technology they need money to development, the sad fact is he can hold people to ransom as they need his software, that's why he wants to eradicate piracy, piracy does no good to the system but it's inevitable.

Is piracy a kind of boycotting?
everyone knows microsoft is the devil. I would never pay for one of their os.Why pay for it when you can download it?

Why pay for your clothes when there's five finger discount? People don't recognise software as "real property" it's jus' the same as the examples above, because it's on a screen, and can be duplicated it's ok, morally it's the same debate. Ford or BMW are big companies? is it ok to jus' drive one of their cars off the forecourt? C

They have activated the CD Key check.
I tried to slipstream the sp1 to the professional version of winxp and when i tried to install it, it says the CD Key is invalid. I slipstreamed SP1 v1078 and that's when i got the error. Damn Microsoft. I get $25 a week!! How the hell am i gonna afford the $400 Australian bucks to buy it??? I'm still stuck with my P3 450!!! and that was paid off over 4 years using a finance company... and that was WITHOUT interest... How does Microsoft expect us to pay for thier products. I'm 18 and go to UNI for god sakes. I have to catch the bus 3 days of the week. That all has to come out of that $25. I would happily buy Windows XP IF I HAD THE MONEY! But i don't, so i have a copy of it. |

well one problem that i have noticed since i started messing with the sp1 betas is that i cannot get my home network to function with ICS.... the other computers have windows 2000 and they can see each other, but not the xp machine.... it didn;t do this till the 1078 build... and another thing i have noticed is that i cannot do anything fron the command prompt... it says all the commands are not recognized..... i am thinking about just putting 2000 back on my main machine too

Craig, Extreme and all the rest of you who are going to school. I had to put 7 boys through college and I know what you mean. The bucks just aint there. I know Gates does care about education and might be doing something about this already. I can empathize with your situations. Its worldwide. Our friends in indo china make hundreds of thousands of illegal copies to distribute them all over the world for $10 US. Thats whats killing Bill not our measley (thousands, if that many) attempts. We think its directed at us but I really don't think so. We serve MS a purpose. We critique their work, and don't think for a minute Bill doesnt have people whose sole job is to monitor forums like ours. Stealing IS stealing but I have a copy of XP in a box that I haven't opened cause I am enjoying this ride with my free copy and want to see how long it will take Bill to make me open that sealed copy of XP in my closet. In the meantime let me make some calls and find out if MS has any options open for you guys. Then you too can have a sealed copy in your closet. Bill if your reading this give these guys a break......... And now that you have Total control over Information Technology lets just say you have a new program called TITS........duh
Have a great Day Bob |

I don't think that the slipstreamed version works with professional keys either, I've seen many attempts and they just can't get a key that works. That's what I think the new algorithm is. From what I understood in the article, installing XP corp then installing sp1 does not run into problems.

To create a "slipstreamed" installation of Windows XP and SP1:
First, connect to the network or computer on which you want to create the distribution folder. For this example, we'll call it C:\XPFILES. On the network distribution share, create a distribution folder for the Windows XP installation files. Put your XP CD in the drive and copy everything to the distribution folder you created. Next, extract the service pack files to a directory by utilizing the -x switch: winxpsp1filename.exe -x Specify the directory you wish when prompted - this is NOT the distribution directory above. For this example, we're using C:\XPSP1 Now, change to the directory where you extracted the SP1 files. In that directory, you'll find an Update folder. Switch to this folder. Now, run the update.exe with the /s switch, as follows: c:\XPSP1\update\update.exe /s:C:\XPFILES This process will take several minutes to complete. Once finished you can utilize this from a network share as an install point, or you can burn back to CD for installing on your machines. This works for all versions of XP including XP Home, and can come in handy should you ever require a reinstall or a reformat/reinstall in the future. If you wish to make this disk bootable, you'll need the xpboot.img file that's widely available on the 'net - it allows you to create a bootable version of this disk, so that you'll have an all-purpose bootable system installation disk. You can then put your original back in the XP box and put it safely away. I don't advise rushing to slipstream the current beta service packs to update your install software unless you just wish to see how it's done for practice purposes. Wait for the release version of SP1 before doing it permanently. Cheers! |

When I made a slipstreamed CD of my Win XP corp CD and tried to install it with my volume key from work it rejected the key saying it was invalid, but when I used a Pro key, and I mean a RETAIL key not an OEM key (they are differant) it worked. So what I'm thinking is what a lot of people have been thinking. The Beta SP1 is for XP Home and Pro only. If you slipstream this SP1 into a Corp version, you just replace all the files that make it a corp version and you turn it into a pro version. So I guess they will be releasing a SP1 for Corp versions as well. I hope..

Shaith, I thought the slipstream switch was -s, not /s... I could be wrong. Haven't done it in a while.

my networking settings were never changed...it was once i installed the sp1 1078 that it is not able to see any of the other computers on the network.... oh well i will have to wait on the real sp1 to see if this is corrected... and no i can't roll back anything because i do not use system restore...and i did not backup any service pack files because i had no problems before and i assumed that since it is getting closer to final that it would be better than the last beta... guess i was wrong.... i have had this problem with the cmd prompt before of course only with the beta sp1....but the next pack will probably fix it.... if not i will reload and try again..!!!

it's officially /s However, according to update.exe, it's actually -s In truth, either one works. (Btw, this method is also the same method used to slipstream windows 2000 sp's into install media, for those who wondered) |
