A look at the Omega Detonator Drivers

This write-up began as a simple exercise of benchmarking the Omega drivers for the Detonator Database. I originally intended to collect my data and let that be the end of the story but while I was running the benchmarks I began to see some disturbing visual behavior from drivers that were supposedly optimized for "quality"

I have loaded the drivers myself, and run them in games such as Q3A, Serious Sam 1&2, Warcraft 3, and have yet to experience the "shimmer" you're referring to.

Admittedly, the Omega drivers don't have the FPS zip of the Detonator drivers - a fact he readily admits. And while the last thing I personally can afford, since I run an older P3/550 with a GTS 64 on an older mainboard that only runs AGP 2x, is a loss of FPS, I STILL loaded these drivers simply to look at the difference in image quality.

The differences in some games are subtle. A slight improvement in the appearance of jaggies in certain textures here and there, a more subtle blur effect, those sorts of things.

Then there was Serious Sam 1 & 2, where the differences were astonishing, so much so that my wife actually asked if I'd gone out and snuck in a new video card on her.

The bottom line, though, is that these drivers are free, and they DO work as advertised. Every person out there deserves to make that decision on their own based on their own data. Frankly, basing the review off of a single test with a single hardware platform is irresponsible and doesn't necessarily reflect the true performance capabilities of these drivers.

I didn't say I had the problem but I usually read all post even if it is negative. It's just "his" opinion and he took time out to run tests.

I like this site because it's not all one sided, it's good to have all opinions.

There are some sites that are full fledged fans of Nvidia, and there are some others that are full fledge ATI.
