Default Post Nvidia: Dodging a Hail of Bullets

Looks Like the Monster chip maker is having some problems.

In the shoot-'em-up business of graphics chips, Nvidia Corp. (NVDA ) has rocketed from obscurity in just four years to become the fastest gunslinger in town. To the delight of gamers worldwide, the company has consistently delivered technology that brings dazzling, movielike digital graphics to computers and game consoles. That helped Nvidia rank as the best-performing stock in the Standard & Poor's 500-stock index last year, with its shares up 308%, to $66.90.

Now, however, the Santa Clara (Calif.) company is dodging a hail of bullets engraved with its name. PC sales are stagnating. Competition from rivals such as ATI Technologies Inc. (ATYT ) and Intel Corp. (INTC ) is intensifying. Manufacturing problems are threatening to delay Nvidia's next-generation chip. Just to top things off, the Securities & Exchange Commission is digging into the company's accounting practices. No wonder Nvidia stock is down 68%, to $21 this year. "For the first time in a long time, Nvidia is being challenged," says analyst Joseph Osha of Merrill Lynch & Co.

Mind you that the 9700 is meant to compete with the ti4600 which it blows away, at this point when nvidia comes out with the nv30 it will be a better card but a pattern is emerging here wheres as ati always manages to do up nvidia one better whenever nvidia comes out with a chip.

Default Post Guess it really comes down to go with what you know...

When it all comes down to it, everyone has their own preference of cards and will most likely go with that brand even if another brand performs a little better at the time. I guess their is security in familiarity. It took me a long time to give up my Voodoo cards, the last being a Voodoo 5, but alas, all the games I liked really worked better on Nvidia cards (they were THE card at the time). I have no qualms with ATI cards and still have an All-in-Wonder 128 that I still like, not for games, but for the other things it does really well. I actually bought one of the original Radeon cards (64MB DDR), but it had a massive problem with the Abit KA7-100 I was using (black screen after post screen no matter how you set it) so I took it back and got a GF2 Ultra. That gave me no problems, so I continued using Nvidia cards. Had the Radeon worked, who knows, I may have an 8500 now instead of this Ti4400, but, I knew I had no problems with Nvidia in the past and I did have problems with ATI, so I went with familiarity. Will the 9700 change my mind..........I doubt it. All my games play at 150+ frames per second now, so why would I change cards?
