"It is the dawn of the 3rd millennium of man. While an overpopulated, resource depleted Earth teeters on the brink of total exhaustion, an esoteric subset of gifted humans make themselves known to the general populous. These "Spirits," promising salvation through scientific enlightenment, lead mankind to discover a subspace realm beyond their miniscule planet. Subspace theoretically allows for rapid transit between otherwise untraversable spans of empty space. Though initially intended to act as an intergalactic highway, this extra-dimensional universe that consists primarily of a devouring void of misunderstood subspace is also littered by pockets of habitable landmasses, giving the greater entity the appearance of a sponge to any layman trying to form a comprehensible analogy. The chain of worlds within subspace can be traveled to by the formation of corridors, a vast undertaking which consumes years of accumulated energy."
