DVD teenager seeks compensation

"A Norwegian who cracked the security codes of DVDs is seeking compensation from police after twice being acquitted of computer piracy.

Jon Lech Johansen, 20, distributed a program on the internet that could break the security codes used on DVDs.

Norwegian courts ruled twice he could not be charged for "breaking" into DVDs he had legally bought, nor for creating a program others might use illegally."

a good decision! if you buy some thing you own it. if you own it you have the right to do any thing with and to that item for your own personal use.

saying that you can't write your own program and use it to manipulate other programs or hardware, is like saying that you can't open up your washer or dryer to fix, replace, or improve on the product.

if you are charged and taken to court, then found not guilty, you should be compensated, the accussers should be held accountable.

if you are found guilty, you can bet the accussers would be after you for all they could, from fines, removal of computer related equipment, and possible jail/prison time. they hold you accountable, so the shoe should fit the other foot too.
