Longhorn moving away from COM and DCOM

"Don Box, a Microsoft software architect in charge of Indigo, the part of Longhorn (the next Windows OS) that involves the ways programs communicate, spoke about Indigo at the Developing Software for the Future Microsoft Platform conference in London.

Microsoft has worked with Component Object Model (COM) and Distributed Compound Object Model (DCOM) in its operating systems to this point. These processes allow objects to be sent between programs in the OS, and were touted as the best option for many years. However, object-oriented programming has taken a downturn with the increased use of Java 2 Enterprise Edition (J2EE), and Microsoft is working hard at keeping up."
