Onlynewz reviews Catalyst, Omega and DNA drivers based on Cat 4.1

"A new battle has born with the new ATI Catalyst drivers. Both DNA and OMEGA released their new sets based on Catalyst 4.1. This time its very important to check out if there is any improvement in both DNA and OMEGA drivers.

Lets see what we used this time to make our conclusion:
Need for Speed - Underground Demo
SpaceHaste 2 Demo
WakeBoarding Unleashed Demo
X2 Demo
Halo Combat Evolved
Farcry Demo
Max Payne 2 - The fall of Max Payne

We benchmarked all the games in Balanced and Optimal Quality mode of the 3D Settings, ofcourse all details set to high."

I think there is one thing about this article that is true, though I am hesitent to really believe the DNA ones were problem free but it could happen, and that is the Omega drivers have something wrong. Aquamark3, for example and yes I know it is synthetic, but between the ATi drivers and the Omega drivers there is a 10,000 point difference. Now synthetic or not, that is one helluva difference. I have never seen this much of a difference between ATi and Omega but this time they are actually slower for me. It is the oddest thing but I guess even Omega can't be perfect everytime.

To Omega's defense, he DID always say that his drivers were for IQ and not benchmarks. And the only game that didn't work at all also didn't work with DNA's set.

But yeah, I always tend to use the Official Catalyst driver myself. It's easier to hollar at ATI, through their feedback program, when somthing doesn't work right.

I liked using Omegas driver just cos its ease of use. as for the VPU recovery problem.. i had errors.. then i decided to just shut it off.. viola .. no more problems..

Very interesting article and very straightforward.

However, I've used both ATi and Omega's on FAR CRY demo without any problems.

I suspect the problem is not so much with the tweaked driver sets and more with the VPU recovery feature itself. I prefer to keep it disabled regardless of what driver set I'm using, for me it just isn't that useful.
