Default Post AMD cuts prices on Athlon, Duron

From CNET News.com

Advanced Micro Devices cut prices Friday on its Athlon XP and Duron processors for both desktop and notebook PCs.

The chipmaker shaved up to 20 percent off prices for Athlon XP chips in an effort to make AMD-based PCs more attractive to buyers, a company representative said. AMD's last price cut was in late May.

Its simple. You get what you paid for.

Don't need to worry about how much $$$ or how BIG of a heatsink I need to get.
Don't need to worry about overheating, and I certainly don't need to worry about bragging about much better I think my chip is over anyone else.

Time for a change in subject...
When you think about it, AMD and Intel both spank Cyrix... am I right?!

Default Post Wow!

I hate to think my first post here is a semi flame post. I honestly think its great that AMD made prices even more attractive for people who haven't upgraded yet. Not to be mean about the AMD, intel thing going on, but I think they are both great products.

I don't see where anyone can get off saying that an AMD chip is a cheaper product in terms of performance or stability. I've been running one of the orginal athlon classics now for two years without one problem!! Never had any heat issues here!

As far as intel, they make great products, but I personally don't have the cash to throw down for the brand name. They are usually about a hundred dollars more for the same lower clocked processor, and the performace isn't worth the extra money. (heh, get the point... the performance is the same or worse!!)

What does everyone think? Upgrade to an XP now that the prices are lower or hold off until the 64 bit products come to light? I want something that will play the next generation games and I know my poor old system here Classic 950 Athlon is on its last leg.

Peace out
Chris

I'd say wait for the 64bit chips, and then maybe upgrade to the XP, cause it will be dirt cheap, and it will be a great increase from a Classic950

Ok I have a question that may sound dumb to some of you. I was going to upgrade to an Athlon 2100 or 2200 but now what are these 64bit chips??? Anyone have any links that talks about them? Maybe I'm better off waiting.

Can you say 3000+, 3800+? Good boy...I thought you could. My question would be will the new processor require a new motherboard or will it work on existing boards? The last BIOS I got for my Epox readme file said "Support for Future AMD processors", but did not go in to detail as to what that meant. It already had support for XP processors 3 updates ago.
