Microsoft warns of widespread Windows flaw

"Microsoft has a message for Windows users: Patch your computers quickly.

On Tuesday, the software giant released a fix for a networking flaw that affects every computer running Windows NT, Windows 2000, Windows XP or Windows Server 2003. If left unpatched, the security hole could allow a worm to spread quickly throughout the Internet, causing an incident similar to the MSBlast attack last summer.

"here are more attack vectors and more people that could be affected by this, said Marc Maiffret, chief hacking officer for eEye Digital Security, the software firm that warned Microsoft of the vulnerability more than six months ago."

Security Update for Windows XP (KB828028)

It seems to be that one.

And as always, keep antivirus software updated and the firewall running with tight security settings. Just as the article says, system patches may just as well not be able to save you in time.

Everything on my rig is manual. Nothing happens automatically, but I did get a new windows update last week- unless this is old news and its talking about the update for IE last week....

I'll check again later and see if I see it..

I have KB828035 and I have KB829558 on my machine- not sure of the install dates, but when I go to the web update site for Winxp it says there are no critical updates, weird. I've been getting all the other ones right along too.

the Auto Update is the fastest way to get the Security Update (critical) for your XP system, i turned it off so the next ones will be to visit the Win Updates site (more often) and let the site scan my system for the needed files.. so if you like to get it fast you'll have to use this.. http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

Or.. just open the Run box and type in... %SystemRoot%\system32\wupdmgr.exe
(and hit enter key) the command will open the IE and take you there..

but if you go to the Win Update Catalog...
you probably wont find some of the Security Update files,
or sometimes it'll show up on the site later than you've expected.

Hmmmm, so this:

http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/en/default.asp

is different that this???

I turn all auto stuff off and just go to widows iupdate by going to IE/ tools/ windows update

*edit

Oh, I see- one doesn't scan your system, it just list's all the updates. I messed up a PC once by downloading and installing the wrong updates by accident once.. That was a long time ago- and I fixed it through sytstem restore (kinda)

Yep you got it on the different between the 2 sites.
for this virus alert periods and becoz you didnt turn on the auto update features.
i'd like to suggest that you let the win updates site scan your system and get the security patches as soon as you know the news and can. Once you knew the file names/versions you can go to the catalog site and pick up the file for use at later time. the above command line that i gave can be run as short as "wupdmgr.exe" and its for ppls who does not have the windows update links. it wont turn on the auto update feature nor its services.
