Dell Debuts P4 Extreme Edition Gaming Notebook

"Last summer, Dell dived into the hardcore PC gamer and enthusiast markets with the Dimension XPS desktop. Now the direct vendor's done something even more extreme, introducing an Inspiron XPS mobile gaming platform with Intel's fastest desktop processors and Dell's first upgradeable laptop graphics.

On the outside, the 9.1-pound XPS comes with one of three exclusive QuickSnap color kits -- Plasma (red and black), Cipher (green and purple), or Skullz (black and white). On the inside, it combines Intel's new 3.4GHz Pentium 4 Hyper-Threading CPU -- or, for about $800 more, the 3.4GHz Pentium 4 Extreme Edition -- with ATI's new 128MB, quad-pipeline Mobility Radeon 9700 DirectX 9.0 graphics controller. Dell promises future graphics upgrades will be available as on-site service calls scheduled at the owner's convenience. Standard equipment includes a 15.4-inch, wide-aspect-ratio (1,920 by 1,200) display, 4X DVD+RW drive, 512MB of DDR400 memory expandable to 2GB, subwoofer sound, and integrated DVI, Gigabit Ethernet, IEEE 1394, and USB 2.0 ports. Prices start at $2,849 ($2,599 after a mail-in rebate). "
