Intel to copy AMD Opteron Processor
"Intel will probably face questions about its anticipated plans to create chips that function like the Opteron processor from Advanced Micro Devices, but it is fairly likely that the company won't face a lawsuit from AMD.
Because of the details of a lengthy 1995 legal settlement between Intel and AMD, Intel can in all probability create and sell chips that are completely compatible with AMD's Opteron and Athlon 64 chips, which can run both 32- and 64-bit software, according to the companies and legal experts. Intel won't even have to pay AMD royalties if it incorporates ideas from any AMD patents into its chips. "My understanding, based on the licensing agreement, is that Intel has access to AMD's patents so patent protection should not be a problem," said Richard Belgard, a noted patent consultant. Intel may have to rename some of the instructions, or commands, embedded in any chip that is similar to Opteron, but "the code can be 100 percent compatible," Belgard added." Full story: zdnet |

So basically...
AMD does the research and development towards the technology...and Intel can "copy"/use it at no extra cost? Wow~

Amd can also use all of intels technology. They are sharing all of their research with each other.

So if that is true, when do we get to see HT style AMD processors? It would be good!

i am not so sure that we would ever see ht in an amd cpu... after all on a lot (not all) of the benchmarks that I have seen ht actually slows the cpu some, depending on the test of course

My how the mighty have fallen......
Having been part of many AMD vs. Intel "discussions" I think it is funny as hell that Intel is being forced to COPY an AMD cpu. How many of you Intel homers have said "An AMD is just a cut rate Intel chip"?
