Matsushita develops hybrid CCD/CMOS sensor [for digital imaging]

"TOKYO — Matsushita Electric Industrial Co., Ltd., has announced an image sensor architecture that features advantages of both CCD and CMOS sensors.
Maicovicon consumes less power consumption than a charge couple device and exhibits higher quality image than a CMOS sensor.

Maicovicon will be available in 1.3 Megapixel and 2 Megapixel versions with a pixel size of 2.8 mm square. The 1.3 Megapixel sensor occupies an area of diagonal length of 4.5mm for a 1/4-inch optical system while the 2-Megapixel sensor has a 5.6mm diagonal length for a 1/3-inch optical system.

The photosensitive area in each pixel is about three times larger than that of CMOS sensors and almost equal to that of CCD sensors."
