"WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- IBM created the term autonomic computing in the Autonomic Computing Blueprint it published in April 2003. Autonomic computing is simply a self-management mechanism for a system or systems. This month Big Blue is getting the development ball rolling by releasing the first autonomic computing SDK. IBM's Chief Research Administrator Dr. John Shedletsky has taken to the road to convince the world that autonomic computing is the wave of the future.
A self-management mechanism
Autonomic computing is comparable to the autonomic nervous system of the human body. For example, people do not consciously breathe or blink their eyes (as you read this, now you'll be self-conscious about breathing and blinking); the autonomic system coordinates those chores. Autonomic computing is about IT systems that can make decisions for themselves to solve problems -- then solve them very quickly -- in order to continue operating. Going further, autonomic computing at its optimum actually prevents problems from happening in the first place."
