Intel delays 3GHz Prescott until April? If so, it's in big trouble

"A REPORT on today's Digitimes wire said that Intel has put off the introduction of 90 nanometre 3GHz Prescotts until April, when it will switch it to the 775 Socket T packaging and not, as originally planned, a 478 pin arrangement.

If the report is true, it is very bad news for Intel. It introduced the Prescotts with barely a whimper earlier this year, at a clock speed of 2.8GHz, much less than the .13ยต (micron) Northwood grades of Pentium 4s.

Digitimes reports that the reason is "production capacity constraints" but this is an unlikely reason, given that the 90 nanometre process is up and running in various Intel fabs.

If the reason is the continuing heat that Prescott generates, things could be worse for Intel than appeared on the new core.

But Digitimes describes the delay as a "blessing in disguise" as the channel will have more time to flog the old fashioned 478 pin Northwood Pentium 4s.

If the report is true, the expression "paper launch" springs to mind. We will ask Intel later this morning about the report."
