Intel to Add Xeon MP Processors with 4MB Cache into Lineup

"Intel Corporation is broadening on Tuesday its family of IA32 processors for multi-chip servers with some new SKUs and Xeon MP 4M processor with astonishingly large level-three cache, sources with knowledge of the matter told News.com.

Intel Xeon MP 3.0GHz 4M microprocessor – presumably based on the Gallatin 4M core – will be Intel’s flagship IA32 offering for 4P/8P platforms quoted at $3692 this year. The novelty does not incorporate Intel’s 64-bit extension technology and is not capable of 64-bit processing – that will be a prerogative of Gallatin’s successor – a chip called Potomac that is due next year.

The new Gallatin with 4MB of L3 cache is very likely to serve Intel pretty well, as there is a plethora of applications where IA32 is enough, while additional cache and clock-speed will deliver skyrocketing performance, what is likely to make the Xeon MP 4M chip a pretty interesting solution.

In an attempt strengthen the overall Xeon MP family with fresh and powerful offerings; Intel is also rumored to add 2.70GHz and 2.20GHz Xeon MP chips into the listings. The 2.20GHz and 2.70GHz models will complement existing Xeon MP microprocessors at 2.80GHz and 2.0GHz with 2MB L3 caches. The new parts will be priced at $1177 and $1980 respectively.

All new Xeon MP microprocessors are drop-in compatible with existing 4P/8P IA32 infrastructure, such as applications based on ServerWorks GC-HE, GC-LE chipsets, using 400MHz Quad Pumped Bus.

Leading server makers, such as Dell, HP and other are expected to incorporate the new Intel Xeon MP processors into their forthcoming products."
