Registry Defragmentation 5.0c

Registry defragmentation performs physical defragmentation of the Windows registry file. After defragmentation your registry will acquire linear structure which will reduce application response time and registry access time. "Registry defragmentation" also removes unused entries, thus making registry even smaller in size. Do not worry if sometimes after defragmentation the registry will become smaller only by 1-5%, the key is not in size but in its linear structure, hence it determines access time.

Usually you'll have to use "Registry defragmentation" when new program is installed/removed. You should perform defragmentations regularly, because registry's linear structure is quickly lost and as the time runs on it only becomes more non-linear. With this aim program package includes special sceduler which can help you to organize such regular optimizations.

I was bored and felt suicidal (or maybe homicidal, I can't quite make up my mind) so I gave it a try. I am pleased to note that it made searches within the registry noticeably quicker, so it must be able to improve its structure just as it claims. I search through regedit fairly oftenly but since most do not I don't think it's something for everyone. It's also a time limited demo, and it installs a scheduler without asking. I'll uninstall it now that I've ran it once.

Can't Windows do it itself theses days? - not with the old and troublesome export and recreate kludge, but with something better?

The old kludge ... and there was a bug in the dos mode regedit that could cause trouble...

The new method, for Win98 at least...

Win98 Registry Compacting.
Win98 has some new tools to help with the registry.Once you have cleaned it up with a Registry cleaner I use then you can restart in Msdos mode and then type scanreg/fix and then scanreg/opt to clean and compact it even more. Also Win98 keeps 5 days back ups of the registry which you can use to get out of a Jam by tying restarting in Msdos and typing scanreg/restore.
