Corsair's TwinX XMS4400 DDR550 Reviewed

"Intel's Canterwood and Springdale chipsets, released back in April 2003, only support a 200MHz bus speed, but Corsair now has Double Data Rate RAM running at 275MHz, much higher then the stock speed of 200MHz. RAM used to be the limiting factor of a system’s performance, but now it’s the motherboard and the CPU’s ability to reach the huge 275 MHz mark.

I’ve seen recent batches of the P4 2.4, 2.8, 3.2 GHz chips reach bus speeds of up to 250 MHz, and I have read that people have gotten them to hit 300 MHz. To do this you need a very overclockable motherboard and a decent Northbridge cooling system. Unfortunately, some CPU’s just won’t be able to reach the 275 MHz bus frequency. Quoting Corsair’s site, it states the following:

XMS4400 memory is intended for use on ultra-overclockable motherboards based on the Intel 875P "Canterwood" chipset. This memory kit consists of two ultra-high-speed memory modules that have been tested together at DDR550 (275 MHz) on a Canterwood based dual-channel motherboard. Relaxed latency settings allow this module to achieve extraordinarily high clock speeds for optimum performance in extreme overclocking rigs. TwinX matched memory pairs are specifically designed to provide the ultimate in performance and stability in motherboards using chipsets with dual memory channels ."
