DOOM 3 System Requirements

The german magazine PCGames Hardware has published a brief Q&A with John Carmack (thanks planetdoom) in their latest issue. According to this interview (if the translation is right) you'll need a graphics card with at least 128MB RAM and Pixel-Shader 1.1, better would be 2.0 of course (GeForce 4 Ti / Radeon 8500 or better) and your CPU should run with at least 2,5 GHz for the game's physics and shadows.

specs:
A video card with at least 128MB RAM and Pixel Shader 1.1 support is required for DOOM 3.
- A 2.5GHz CPU should be enough for the stencil shadows and physics calculations.
- The testing phase might last till summer or even later this year.
- DOOM 3 will be released on 4 CDs and multiplayer will include Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Tournament and Last Man Standing.

I'm way under and I am so not upgrading till I can get a dirt cheap AMDFX51. Though thy are not minimum system requirements so its not so bad.

A 2.5ghz what? Barton? P4? major difference as a 3200mhz P4 is around the same game performance as a 2250mhz 3200+ barton - seems kinda vague to me. I think if you have a 3000-3200+ barton or a 3 ghz P4 with a 9800 series card the game will run fine. unless of course Warren spectors team gets near it, then a promethia cooled P4 at 5 ghz will still run it like S*IT.

as by most modern day games will need a reasonable pc to get a good performance out of games.

time will tell if these specs are correct for the optimal pc setup?(only posted what i found)

My first thoughts too- Everybody knows games run differently on Intel and AMD rigs, and that you can't just compare Mhz to Mhz...

Anyway- why no system ram specs? Will 512 be enough? It should be, but I won't be surprised if they say you nees 768 or 1 gig-

I'm quite certain they mean P4 2.5 GHz.

For 2 reasons:

1. I haven't seen many average users having 2.5 GHz AMDs
2. I haven't seen many specs for games using AMD's real clockrate.

Ok, that's probably true, so how does that translate into AMD? Do you go by the "PR" rating? I think my Tbred running at 2.1 to 2.3 ghz will probbaly be enough, but I wonder what they would say.

Well, this is really to soon to tell, time will tell what runs good and what doesnt. Things with specs for games is that not all systems run in the same way, i remember when i had a P3 450Mz, 512 Pc133 and GF3 ti200 i could run games just fine with below min rec specs for some games, so this really depends.

Yeah, PR Rating. So a 2500+ would be the requirement. A lot of people already compare PR rating with MHz of Intel. It's an unofficial way to compare, but it's a good estimation. I'm not too surprised with the "hefty" requirement.

Yeah, a lot of minimum requirements are inaccurate. It's really just an estimation. Is it too early to tell? Yes. It's always too early to tell until we see it on the box.

An OC's 9700p does better- but I saw that over 700mb of pagefile was being used which caused stuttering and huge pauses in the game..
