Bye-Bye, Pop-Ups. Hello...?
"Pop-up ads, those reviled windows that intrude on your Web surfing, seem to be on the decline. But don't celebrate yet: New forms of advertising that may be just as annoying and even more intrusive are likely to replace them. Thwarted by both ISPs and blocking utilities, use of pop-ups has waned over the past year. Internet advertising analysts say Microsoft's decision to put a pop-up stopper into the next version of Internet Explorer hastens their demise, but no one expects them to disappear soon. And new styles of ads, including screen-grabbing full-motion videos and rich media that overwrite the screen, are starting to appear. "

Honestly I don't know why people are so bothered by ads. I mean sites with a butt load of pop ups I can understand. But other sites with the occasional timed pop up. It's really not that big of deal. It's just like watching TV. Commercials exist... As long as the ads are placed that you have to go out searching for content I have no problems. Sites have to make money too to stay alive...

Pop ups are annoying..
Really they are, I don't mind embedded ads. I don't mind having ads on TV either. But, imagine you were watching The Simpsons and right in the middle of the intro, a commercial just pops up. There's a certain time where commercials are "appropiate". Popups aren't that seamless, but rather disruptive.

In a magazine, you can have full-page ads that aren't intrusive - they won't suddenly run on top of the article you're reading and flash annoyingly until you acknowledge them... unlike popups.

There are many types of pop ups, some of these are very intrusive and when closed pop up more ads. Others like the popunder I have on the front page of this site run on a timer and only pop up one ad which has no spyware attached. Unfortunately its a catch 22 situation and alot of people dont really understand the costs of running a large site. Popups pay quite substantial amounts of money and cover alot of costs. If they dont continually intrude on the use of the site or your web viewing I dont see a problem. I run an pop up blocker via alexa toolbar but all my favourite sites I allow popups to work to help the people continue to operate.

there are sites out there that think they need to have 6 banner ads in the page, 2 intro pop-ups and a whole bunch of exit pop-ups... and they aren't even porn sites. This is not acceptable. I use firebird and recently I learned that I am able to right click the embeded ads and select to block the pictures too.. this way they make $0
Yes its mean, but one ad is more than enough... I don't want to be bombarded with ads when I visit a site. |
